<a href="http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/02/sony-announces-the-end-of-the-minidisc/">Discontinued</a> as an audio and data storage format in 2013 due to the success of CD and MP3 technology, though the emoji is commonly used to represent CDs, DVDs, and related film and music content, especially albums.

Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/nl/samsung/experience-9.0/harddisk/">previously featured</a> a silver disc labeled MD, for minidisc. <a href="/nl/au-kddi/type-a-2/harddisk/">Early designs</a> from au by KDDI showed an angled <a href="/nl/floppydisk/">💾 Floppy Disk</a>, perhaps as being inserted or ejected into a computer drive.

Harddisk

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joystick">joystick</a>, as used in playing classic arcade, computer, or video games. Generally depicted with a black base, red-knobbed control stick, and one or more red buttons.

Commonly used for content concerning various types of gaming; occasionaly applied to aviation and aircraft.

Google&#39;s base was <a href="/nl/google/android-8.0/joystick/">previously</a>&nbsp;blue, and&nbsp;Microsoft <a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10/joystick/">previously featured</a> a more modern design.

Joystick

Three eighth notes (quavers in British English), used to represent music or singing. Sometimes inserted&nbsp;next to&nbsp;quoted&nbsp;lyrics, to make it clear that they are part of a song.

Muzieknoten

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pager">pager</a>, as worn on the waist to alert a person to a phone call&nbsp;or short text message. Popular in the 1980&ndash;90s before <a href="/nl/mobiele-telefoon/">mobile phones</a>, though still used by some medical and emergency personnel. Very occasionally used to represent alerts, digital communication, or nostalgia for old technology.

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fax">fax</a> machine, as scans and transmits documents over a telephone line. Common in the 1980&ndash;90s before the internet. Depicted as a white or black machine with a <a href="/nl/telefoonhoorn/">telephone handset</a>, keypad, display screen, and paper in its tray.

Sometimes used in emoji&nbsp;form as&nbsp;an alternative to the words&nbsp;facts, due to the similarity of pronounciation. In a sentence:&nbsp;&quot;all 📠 no 🖨&quot;

A laptop personal computer. Depicted as a black or gray device, opened to show a dark or blue screen, keyboard, and touchpad.

Commonly used for various content concerning computer technology, work, and activity.

Previous designs resembled a <a href="/nl/desktop/">desktop computer</a>&nbsp;(e.g., <a href="/nl/apple/ios-9.0/laptop/">iMac</a>) on many platforms, hence its Unicode name of&nbsp;Personal Computer. Apple&rsquo;s design now resembles a MacBook.

Laptop

A desktop personal computer. Generally depicted as a black or gray monitor with a dark or blue screen.

Like <a href="/nl/laptop/">💻 Laptop Computer</a>, used for various content concerning computer technology, work, and activity. May also be used to represent <a href="/nl/laptop/">television</a>, as it resembles a flatscreen TV.

Google and WhatsApp include <a href="/nl/toetsenbord/">keyboards</a>. Apple&rsquo;s design resembles an iMac. <a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/desktop/">Microsoft</a> and <a href="/nl/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/desktop/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> designs previously featured PC towers.

Desktop

A trackball, as rotated to control a cursor on a computer. An alternative or supplement to a <a href="/nl/computermuis/">computer mouse</a> or touchpad. Generally depicted as a cordless device with a blue or red ball in a cylindrical, black or gray socket.

Occasionally used for various content concerning <a href="/nl/videogame/">gaming</a>. Facebook&rsquo;s design featurs a rectangular base, while Google&rsquo;s design <a href="/nl/google/android-11.0/trackball/">previously</a> featured&nbsp;a cord.

Trackball

A silver <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_disc">optical disc</a>, as a CD or <a href="/nl/dvd/">DVD</a>, used to play music or movies before the rise of streaming technology. Commonly used to represent CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and related film and music content, especially albums.

Optische Schijf

Filmcamera

A classic television set, as people watched before streaming on flatscreens.&nbsp;Depicted in various colors and styles with a screen, knobs, and, on many platforms, rabbit-ear antennae.

Commonly used for television broadcasting as well as various content involving screens, from watching <a href="/nl/filmcamera/">movies</a> to playing <a href="/nl/videogame/">video games</a>.

Google&rsquo;s design <a href="/nl/google/android-8.0/tv/">previously</a> featured&nbsp;a more modern-looking orange TV.&nbsp;Apple&rsquo;s <a href="/nl/apple/iphone-os-2.2/tv/">first design</a> was yellow, while&nbsp;Microsoft&rsquo;s <a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10/tv/">previous design</a> was a flatscreen.

A classic camera, shown with its flash going off, as to illuminate a darker scene. Vendors implement the same design as <a href="/nl/camera/">📷 Camera</a> with a burst of light, often&nbsp;resembling <a href="/nl/botsing/">💥 Collision</a>.

Camera Met Flitser

A video camera, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camcorder">camcorder</a> used to film home videos in the 1980&ndash;90s. Generally depicted as a gray or black video camera with viewfinder, control buttons, and lens pointed&nbsp;left.

Commonly used for various content concerning film and video as well as an icon for a video, as before an upload, link, or credit.

Videocamera

A videotape cassette, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VHS">VHS</a> tape used to watch movies or record <a href="/nl/tv/">TV</a> on VCRs before <a href="/nl/dvd/">DVDs</a> , DVRs, and streaming. Generally depicted as a black cassette with a white label between its reels.

Occasionally used for various content concerning film and video (taping) as well as an icon for a video, as before an upload, link, or credit. May also be used to represent audio <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassette_tape">cassette tapes</a>.

Microsoft&rsquo;s design <a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10/videoband/">previously resembled</a> a voicemail icon.

Videoband

A light-brown or yellow rectangular tag, as labelled and attached to a <a href="/nl/sleutel/">key</a>. Depicted&nbsp;at various angles&nbsp;punched with a hole, generally with a metal ring or loop of string.

Commonly used to represent a price tag or metadata tag as well as for various senses of label.

WhatsApp&#39;s is white.&nbsp;Apple removed&nbsp;its ring from <a href="/nl/apple/ios-10.2/label/">earlier&nbsp;designs</a>. Samsung <a href="/nl/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/label/">previously featured</a> the easter egg initials HMJ,&nbsp;while&nbsp;Google&#39;s design <a href="/nl/google/android-8.0/label/">previously</a>&nbsp;featured&nbsp;two tags.

Label

An eject symbol, displayed as an upward-pointing triangle above a horiztonal bar. May be used as a physical button or an icon in a user interface. Represents the action of&nbsp;ejecting physical media such as a <a href="/nl/floppydisk/" title="💾 Floppy Disk">floppy disk</a>, <a href="/nl/videoband/" title="📼 Videocassette">videocasette</a> or <a href="/nl/dvd/" title="📀 DVD">DVD</a>&nbsp;on a <a href="/nl/laptop/" title="💻 Personal Computer">computer</a>&nbsp;or media player.

Some characters in <a href="/nl/unicode-5.2/">prior</a>&nbsp;versions of Unicode were retroactively updated to provide&nbsp;an emoji presentation. This release was the first to introduce new characters for the sole purpose of compatability with emojis being used in Japan.

Samsung devices use <a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/samsungs-emoji-suite-makes-for-a-more-emotional-digital-world">their own emoji designs</a>&nbsp;which are different to those used on other <a href="/nl/google/">Android devices</a>. These&nbsp;glossy emojis&nbsp;appear on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note series and are updated as part of the Samsung One UI interface layer (previously Samsung Experience, before that Samsung TouchWiz)&nbsp;which runs on top of Android.

Note that Samsung users may see select emojis display as their <a href="/nl/google/">Google</a>&nbsp;set design. This is due to <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/faster-emoji-updates-on-the-way-for-android-apps/">Android AppCompat</a>, which will display a Google emoji design within an app or web platform&nbsp;when a Samsung device has not yet been updated to support that particular emoji.

Since the introduction of Samsung&#39;s emoji set in 2014, various Unicode characters that have not been recommended to have emoji presentation have nevertheless been given a colorful emoji design on Samsung platforms.
